Shingles is caused by the varicella- zosta virus, this is the same virus that causes chicken pox in children.  So if you had chicken pox as a child you already carry the shingles virus.  Shingles can be a debilitating condition that often strikes unexpectedly and can last for months.  But it doesn’t have to be this way. 
I woke up on 2nd January with shingles in a palm sized patch on my back.  I knew it was shingles by the way it felt, 1000 hot needles every time I touched it.  When I thought about it I had been feeling a bit off over the Christmas period and for the few days prior had had a headache that I just couldn’t get rid of.
 
My first thought was great, happy new  year to me.  But on reflection it wasn’t surprising, 2018 had been a particularly stressful year for me health wise and although my health is fine now the stress of Christmas was obviously enough to make my body react.  What to do?  I consider myself lucky that I have the knowledge and the remedies I need close at hand when I need them most of the time.
 
So it was out with the books to find the remedies that I needed this time.  Two remedies were all I needed, one to stop the virus in its tracks and the other to relieve the soreness and itching.  Over the next few days I could feel different areas of my torso start to get tingly and tender to touch but the rash never broke out anywhere else.  The area that had broken out developed very small blisters that never got big enough to break and within a week the blisters had turned into small scabs and were healing up nicely.
 
I had a couple of people ask me why I had not got the shingles vaccination, I honestly never thought about it and didn’t think I would need it.  As it turned out I didn’t need it, my shingles were effectively healed within a week of breaking out.  Two weeks later the area is still a bit bumpy to feel but not sore and is well healed.
