Did you know that every part of the avocado tree except the flesh of the fruit is poisonous? Such a delectable fruit but it can be so dangerous.
Our neighbour inadvertently left the logs from a fallen avocado tree where his stock could get at them not thinking they would bother with it. He noticed one of his animals looking a bit under the weather for a few days he asked me what I thought. This animal was definitely in a bad way. It was hunched over, had sunken eyes and hardly moved. When it did move it was really slow and obviously very painful. The bowel motions were hard and lumpy like a horses. We then noticed that some of the avocado logs had the bark stripped off them. Could this be the problem?
A quick search on google and sure enough avocado bark is poisonous to animals and can be fatal. What to do? The vet was not an option as there are no stock yards and we couldn't get close enough to the sick one to give it anything.
Law of homeopathy is 'similia similibus curenter' - like cures like. I collected some of the bark off the logs and made up a homoepathic remedy, not quite to the laws that it should have been but there was no time to waste. We then proceeded to dose the drinking water, we suspected some of the others had been at the bark as well. How to treat the sick animal. "They like silver beet, we often through it over the fence for them". So a dose of Avocado 30c onto a silver beet leaf every hour for the rest of the day. By evening the affected animal was looking better and had started eating again. We kept up the regime of dosing the water twice a day and the affected animal every few hours for the next few days. Day by day there was a gradual improvement, after four days the animal was back to its normal self. Homeopathy is truly wonderful.
