Psoriasis of the scalp
Jane, aged 12, presented at my clinic with bad psoriasis in her hair, so bad that mum would sit at night and peel the lumps of flaking skin out of her very long and very oily hair. I spent an hour with Jane and her mum asking Jane how this affected her life, how did she feel about it. She was a fairly laid back lass and wasn’t overly bothered by the psoriasis ‘meh it doesn’t really bother me’ was her over riding attitude. I really struggled on that first appointment to get anything personal from Jane so I prescribed her a remedy that is well known for treating psoriasis. A month later mum told me that it had improved a little but was still pretty bad, so I asked her to bring Jane back. I needed more information. I asked Jane about her diet, I had already been told she had an extremely sweet tooth and loved lollies and chippies. So, I asked her if she had the choice of what they had for dinner every night what would she choose. Instantly she said steak. This is unusual for a girl her age. Her mother followed up with ‘yes and she loves it really rare, she will drink the juice off the plate’. This was the gem I needed to find the right remedy for her. Out of the 3000+ remedies there is only one that has ‘love of rare meat’. It also has an aversion to bathing, so I asked mum what Jane was like at shower time each day. The answer, I have to nag her to death and if I don’t, she will manage of avoid it. I had found the right remedy. 3 weeks later her psoriasis was completely healed, and I haven’t seen her since.
Seasonal Hayfever
Mrs J presented with seasonal hayfever. From early November through until mid February she suffered the following symptoms: itchy eyes, constant sneezing, itching soft palate, sore throat, sore ears and sometimes an asthma type cough which left her short of breath. Her symptoms were much worse during mid summer when neighbouring farmers were cutting hay and also after the lawns around her house were mowed for about a day and a half. She noticed major improvement in her symptoms when she spent time away from home, in town for the day or on holiday. She felt reasonably sure that it was summer grass that she was sensitive to. The remedy of mixed grasses in a 30c potency was given to alleviate the current symptoms being experienced. After only 24 hours there was a noticeable decline in her symptoms and over a period of a few days only one dose per day was required to keep her symptoms under control. During the following winter a lower potency of 10x was given every second day for two weeks to encourage a desensitisation process. The following summer Mrs J reported very few symptoms for the whole of the summer and any mild symptoms experienced were cleared by a dose of the mixed grasses 30c remedy. Two summers later with no further treatment Mrs J reports only minimal symptoms being experienced which again are under control with the the odd dose of 30c remedy. "I may try that 10x again this winter to see if it goes away completely." She may well be right.
Master T (age 11) was brought to me by his mum who was at her wits end as to what to do with him. Over the past few months he had become extremely emotional to the point where his parents had no idea what would set off the tears and why. He had always been a sensitive boy but recently he seemed to be spending more time in his room on his own and was often crying, although Mum often had no idea why. Once I started talking to Master T it was obvious what his Mum was telling me. As soon as I turned my attention from Mum to him his eyes welled up and it wasn't very long at all before he was crying. When I asked him why he said he didn't know. He is a very bright child, does well at school, although his teacher has recently expressed concern that he was becoming withdrawn. He has a few close friends and during my talk with him he admitted that recently he had been getting bullied. He is a very tidy child, likes to have his toys put away in their proper place. Each toy has it's own home. Family is important to him, he really enjoys being around his siblings and cousins and misses them when they go away on holiday. He gets annoyed and frustrated when other children at school take advantage of the less able children, 'it's not fair that they do that'. Master T is very obviously a sensitive lad and has a lot of empathy for those less fortunate, but the constant tears is unusual for a boy his age. I prescribed Pulsatilla 30c twice daily for two weeks.
Follow up three weeks later I saw a different child walk through my door. How are you feeling T? "I'm happy", and he proceeded to tell me all about the happenings in his life since his last visit. He had changed from a boy who didn't want to answer questions, sat in the chair looking at the floor trying really hard not to cry, to a happy lad who looked me in the eye and had a sparkle in his. Six weeks later Mum phoned to say she was really pleased with how he was progressing, he had even stood up to the bully and put him in his place.

Mrs R, a married woman in her 50’s presented in my clinic with chronic sinusitis that was relieved when she left the area of her home to go on holiday. She suffered the following symptoms;
An interesting statement that Mrs R made was that whenever she travels overseas on holiday all her symptoms disappear. This indicated to me that there could be something in her home environment that was causing these symptoms or it could be an emotional reaction to a situation at home. I prescribed Nux Vomica in 30c potency as it matched her symptoms well.
Two weeks later Mrs R reported that ‘things were clearing up well’. She has been taking her remedy regularly every day. She still had a bit of gunge in the back of her throat on waking in the morning and has occasionally woken with tired eyes and a head ache across her forehead but it wasn’t as bad as before. Following my advice she continued her remedy, gradually decreasing the number of doses daily as her symptoms improved. Within a few days of stopping the remedy her symptoms starting returning indicating that the potency of the remedy was not keeping up with the rate of healing that was taking place. I prescribed the same remedy but in an increased potency of 200c to be taken twice daily.
Eight months later Mrs R returned to my clinic with a deep seated sinus infection, very sore ears that felt like the ear drums were about to burst, deafness and a very wet cough. During her consultation she described the mucus in her throat and nose as being really stringy and she was unable to get rid of it. This is a symptom of Kali bichromium which also has a tight headache across the forehead. A lot of the current symptoms were the same as her previous visits. I prescribed Kali Bichromium 30c potency and gave Mrs R a dose while she was with me. Before she left she said she could already feel the headache lifting and her eyes were not so tired. This confirmed the remedy for me. Over the next few weeks the prescription remained the same but in ever increasing potency to match the healing process that was happening within Mrs R's body until she no longer needed to take it on a daily basis. She now takes a Kali Bichromium 1m once a month to keep on top of symptoms that she has had for well over five years. If she ever feels that her symptoms may be returning, especially during the spring, she repeats a few doses of the 30c potency and all symptoms are relieved within a few days. Although the Nux Vomica had previously eased her symptoms as it was close match it was not an exact match, while the Kali Bichromium has proved to be the Simillimum (the exact match).
- Itchy tired eyes that cause her to blink a lot
- Itching deep inside her ears with a sore lump on the side of the throat
- Waking in the morning with a dry mouth coated in brown gunge and her mouth has a metallic taste
- Tightness around the forehead with a feeling of a band across the forehead
- Has a background headache all day
- Roof of mouth always feels dry
- Nose blocks on the right side on going to bed and stays blocked all night
- Feeling tired by 3pm every day
- Has a deep phlegmy cough every couple of days that starts with a tickle in the throat
